Family-friendly fine dining in the Big Easy...yes, it IS possible!
One of the best things about living in New Orleans is the food! There are so many wonderful local restaurants to choose from! But when you have young children in tow, you may think fine dining is out of the question. I get it. I have 3 kids. But I couldn't give up eating out with other adults all together. And I also wanted to expose my kids to a world of cuisine outside of chicken nuggets. Here are some tips from this mom to have your fine dining cake and eat it too! First, you have to eat early. Sorry, kids will turn into Gremlins after 8 pm. Well, at least mine do. I usually make all my reservations no later than 6 pm and inform the restaurant of my kids' ages so they are aware and can seat our family appropriately. This time is best because most restaurants are not as busy and can get your food out quicker. I would suggest ordering something kid-friendly dishes like roasted chicken or pasta. Most restaurants can modify a dish or two to accommodate young taste buds. Then, I like to order something totally different for myself so the kids could try something new. Our rule is try it. If you don't like, you do not have to eat more. Unfortunately, now our 11 yr old daughter will try to order Kobe steak ($$$) every chance she gets! Fine dining also requires fine table manners. I do not allow my girls to have any electronics or devices at the table. We treat fine dining as a treat and an experience. We use that time to talk and enjoy the food! Unfortunately, my youngest child who is only 1 is the only exception to this rule. He is too young (and smart) to abide by our device-free table rule. Peppa Pig is the only thing that will keep him from running around the restaurant like a wild animal! Lastly, have fun. After all, food and family time makes for wonderful long-lasting memories.
